The Five People You Meet in Heaven
Each summer we attempt to pick a key movie or book that our youth/and or their parents have read/viewed and use it to demonstrate that God does not only speak through the Bible, but He also speaks through everyday things, through our passions and pursuits. Since movies and books are very popular forms of communication and entertainment, why wouldn’t God use it them to get our attention?
The last two summers we have delved into “The Shack” and “The Hunger Games.” This summer we have chosen to convey God’s message through Mitch Albom’s “The Five People You Meet in Heaven”. Each week, during Sunday school in June and July, we will read excerpts from the book or show brief excerpts from the movie and ask our youth to dig for the message in the story. Then we will tie it in to what God’s Word has to say about it. Our goal is to help our youth recognize that God does speak to us, individually, and is interested in what we are passionate about.
It is so easy to let summer become a vacation from church, but, if you are serious about wanting your youth to grow in their relationship with the Lord, please encourage them to be a part of this summertime “treasure hunt.”
Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. — Proverbs 2:3-5
